This last week, a lawsuit was filed against Dez Bryant. He is accused of not paying his tab for $500,000 in jewelry. He may have stiffed his co-signer and the two jewelry stores for the cost of his new bling. If he did this, then Dez is showing his youth and immaturity.

Some people have blown this out of proportion.  They are ranting and raving about Bryant. These same people declare he is falling apart and will self destruct the Cowboys.

We all know that wide receivers can be divas. Some of them like the flash and spot light. Dez appears to be one of them.

Dez Bryant has not physically harmed anyone.  He was not stopped for driving drunk.  He has not even ranted about his teammates and/or his coaches.  It is not like he was caught with hookers and cocaine.  

Bryant flashed his skill and talents on the field last season.  Injuries prevented him from playing several games but he demonstrated why the Cowboys coveted him at the draft.  He will be a playmaker for years to come.

I am not saying that we need to dismiss Bryant’s off the field issues.  He should be held accountable for his bills and choices.  If he owes this money for a vanity like jewelry, then he should be made to pay for it. I hope he learns from this and adds people around him to help him with his off the field and financial choices.  But this is not at a level that will be detrimental to the Dallas Cowboys.

Thoughts on Cowboys Hiring Jason Garrett as their New Head Coach

The Counselor is IN:

I have mixed feelings about the Dallas Cowboys hiring Jason Garrett as their new Head Coach. There are things I really like about Jason.  I also have concerns about Garrett.

Positives:
1) Garrett changed the culture in Dallas. This to me is the biggest selling point for Jason.  After starting the season 1-7 and the players quiting on Wade, Jason was able to rally the troops.  He implemented harder practices, hitting during practice, personal responsibility for behavior, expectation of showing up on time, and dressing up for road games.  The team responded positively to these changes.  

2) Jason know the system. Jason understand the current system in Dallas.  I am sure he will want to make some changes.  But he will not come in and cause the Cowboys to spend the next 5 years rebuilding because of his scheme changes.

3) Garrett knows how to deal with Jerry and management.  It can take some time to understand how an organization works.  He will have no issue here.

Concerns:
1) The Offense was part of the problem under Wade.  Garrett was the Offensive Coordinator for the first 8 games where they went 1-7. They did not run the ball and the play calling was predictable.  We could not protect Romo because we could not run the ball. This was a gigantic issue.

2) Record was not that impressive. Yes we went 5-3 under Jason and over a full season that would be an acceptable 10-6.  But the last win that we squeaked out was against an Eagles team that rested most of their starters.  I do understand that we started a third string QB but this team should have dominated the Eagles backups.  If they had started their starters, we would be 4-4 under Jason and that would only be an 8-8 season.

3) He has never been a head coach at any level.  He did a decent job for his half season but he has never been in charge of an off season or a draft.  This is a concern for the Red Headed Genius.

Conclusions
Ultimately Jerry did not consult my opinion.  He picked Garrett and believes in him. The players appear to be backing this decision full hearted.  As much as I have some reservations about this selection, I am not sure Jerry would have gotten a bigger name coach.  Other teams were asking permission to interview him.  I throw my support behind Jason and hope he can continue to change the lazy culture of the Dallas Cowboys. I will continue to hope that Jerry made the correct decision.

Is Jason Garrett the answer in Dallas?

Two weeks ago, I would have laughed at this question, “Is Jason Garrett the answer in Dallas?”  The only thing that brought more fear to me than leaving Wade Phillips as the coach, was to give the position to Jason Garrett because his offense appeared to under achieving more than Wade’s defense.  After two victories under Garrett, I am not so quick to deny the validity of the question.

During the first 9 weeks of the season (only played 8 games because of bye week) , the Dallas Cowboys average right around 10 penalties a game.  In the two weeks under Jason “Red Headed Genius” Garrett, the number penalties have almost dropped in half.  The Cowboys have averaged 5.5 penalties over the last two weeks.

Under Wade this season, the Cowboys continually turned over the football.  They were -10 on the turnover ratio for Wade’s eight ball games.  Over the last two games, the Cowboys are plus 3.

Jason Garrett is having the Boys work on the small details.  He has them wearing pads and practicing at full speed during the week.  He is enforcing meeting times and making the players be responsible.  He even implemented a dress code for the players for flights and game day.  You can see this has made a difference by watching how different this team has approached both of these games under Garrett.  It is hard to argue with the declining penalties and turnovers.

It does appear that Garrett has been the answer over Wade Phillips for these two games.  After just two games, I am not willing to declare Garrett the long term answer in Dallas.  They need to continue to stay focused and disciplined.  If Garrett can get the Cowboys to play more focused and to continue to work on the details this season, then he just may be the long term answer in Dallas.

Are the Cowboys really this bad?

I have watched at least a portion of every Chiefs game this season because I live in Chiefs country. This Chiefs team is really bad. They are a team with a bad offensive line. Larry Johnson is a has-been. The Chief’s defense is in flux. They have moved from a 4-3 last year to a 3-4 this year without the players to do it. There is a good reason the Chiefs were 0-4 going into Week 5.

The Dallas Cowboys came into the Chiefs game needing to prove that they could dominate a bad team. They failed at this miserably.

The Achilles heel of the Cowboys for years has been the stupid penalties and this was apparent in this game. It is called a lack of DISCIPLINE! Both sides of the ball made lame brain plays that cost yardage, 1st downs, and momentum. They will never win consistently if this does not change with some personal DISCIPLINE.

The Cowboys continued to struggle in the Red Zone and picked up field goal attempts (missing one) instead of touch downs. This goes hand in hand with the stupid penalties because many of the Red Zone drives have been killed with penalties. When they get in the red zone they need to bring out the killer instinct and punch it in.

A lack of focus by our receivers allowed several catches to become drops. Some of these were touch downs that did not happen and others were 3rd down conversions.

They struggled to move the ball on the ground when the Boys' offensive line far out weighs the Chiefs’ D-Line. This completely baffles me. How are we not able to run the ball on a terrible defense like the Chiefs? We should have had over 200 yards on the ground.

Early fumbles set the Cowboys behind the 8 Ball. We allowed the momentum of this game to quickly shift to the Chiefs and allowed it to stay with them most of the game.

So are we really this bad? Yes. Let me quote our former coach, Bill Parcells, "You are what your record says you are."

Tashard Choice has a blog through the Dallas Cowboys' website. He mentions in his first post that our friends at the Blogging The Boys website helped him create his blog. I am excited to read what Choice will have to say as the off season turns to preseason into the regular season.

Roy Williams could save the Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys need Roy Williams or someone like Roy to get back on track in 2009. I am not referring to the Cowboys previous hard hitting safety. I am not talking about their current wide receiver. The Roy Williams I am focusing on is the national champion North Carolina basketball coach.

Coach Williams lead the Tar Heals to another national championship in the big March Madness tournament. I watched the Coach manage his team and their strengths continually during the season and their Final Four March. He knows how to work the referees and the press. He gives all the positive accolades to his players while taking responsibility for what went wrong on the way.

Coach Williams is not a players coach but he is also not dictator on the court. He brings a balance with coaching where he is respected by his players and they want to play their best for him and their selves. He can motivate his team and control their behaviors without throwing chairs. I am not a Wade hater but Wade will need to change his approach if he wants to bring the Boys back to their glory. The Cowboys tried the dictator approach with Coach Parcells and it did not work for the Boys either.

Coach Williams was able to get the most out of a greatly talented team. The Cowboys were one of the most talented NFL teams last year but could not make the playoffs. 2009 promises to return a greatly talented team even without T.O. but I have to wonder if the Cowboys will be able to get the most out of this team. They need a balanced approach when it comes to coaching like Roy Williams would bring.

On Saturday, I posted an article on this blog entitled "How About Vick?" where I discussed how the Cowboys could use Michael Vick and my thoughts. I posted this article on Sports Jabber. It was picked up from Sports Jabber by the fine folks at Bleacher Report. Since that time, it has 1085 read on Bleacher Report. I am both shocked and excited about the response.

The Cowboys priority during this off season needs to be a quality backup quarterback. It would best to pick up a QB with experience and that could push Tony Romo. Doyle and I discussed this on the radio a few weeks ago. The issue will be a lack of quality backup quarterbacks on the market. It is doubtful that Warner or Collins will be allowed to be true free agents and I also doubt either will be interested in riding the bench behind Romo. Garcia may be the best option but he is unlikely to come to Dallas with Owens still on the roster.

While watching ESPN tonight, I found an interesting candidate. The Atlanta Falcons are attempting to find a trade partner for Michael Vick. It is doubtful that any team will be willing to give up a draft pick for this felon. I anticipate that Vick will be released from the Falcons.

Vick is a former starter and should be willing to sit the bench after serving time for his federal dog fighting conviction. He is a player that could push Romo if Tony struggles. If Vick still possess his athleticism and speed, the Boys might even institute the Wild Cat formation.

Vick will be looking to reform his reputation and the Boys might be able to put the right people around him to assist in this process. Jerry is looking to prove to his critics and he still can rehab the problem children of the league after the Pacman fiasco. This kind of deal could get done.

I think Vick might be able to come to Valley Ranch and help the Boys while the Boys help Vick. It makes a lot of sense if Jerry can arrange a deal where Vick will not receive any guaranteed money. It makes business sense and fits a need, but as a fan that would like to see this team jell and play like a team. I think Vick would be the wrong answer.

The hope of a great 2008 Dallas Cowboys season were not just snuffed out on Sunday but obliterated. The team that was built to win it all could not secure a playoff spot. . They went into Philly knowing that they would make the playoffs if they won. Instead they decided not show up. In the National Football League, you are not given a playoff spot just because your team looks great on paper. No, you have to get there the old fashioned way, you have to earn it. These Cowboys played with little heart and little brains.

As a fan, I feel crushed, let down, and hugely disappointed. I wonder if I wasted my whole fall rooting for the team of prima donnas that could not play as a team. I am experiencing the pain of high expectations and low productivity.

Tony Romo is now hanging his head. I am with you, Tony. Luckily I do not have to go to work tomorrow and face all the Cowboy haters who will be overjoyed by the poor play of the Cowboys.

There is always next year. Maybe I will be able to buy some discounted Cowboys gear after this performance.

Bring out the Cowboys Cheerleaders

After watching the Dallas Cowboys lose the last two weeks, I had a few thoughts about America's Team. My first thought is that the offensive and defensive lines look like a bunch of girls out there. They should change their uniforms to have a skirt. They were pushed around by the Arizona Cardinals and the St. Louis Rams. Is this the team with 13 returning Pro Bowlers from last year? At this rate, none of them will be going to Hawaii unless they go as a team during the playoffs since they are trying not to make the playoffs.

The offensive line could not protect either Romo or Brad Johnson. Romo was put on his butt over 20 times against Arizona and a broken pinkie. This week they could not protect the statuesque Johnson. It is important to remember that you have to give the QB time to throw the ball so T.O. can catch the ball.

On the other side of the ball, the 'Girls, I mean 'Boys, could not stop the run. This week they let the talented Steven Jackson run all over them. The problem is that the Rams have a piecemeal offensive line. There is no reason that Jackson should have been able to run for 100 yards let alone 160.

Then there are the issues in the secondary. I understand that the injury to Newman is devastating. I know that they are even missing the erratic play of 80's Arcade Standard. But could someone please cover the Rams rookie Avery?

I originally was going to suggest that the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders should replace the Boys on the field because they at least would look hot while giving away the game. But then I thought twice about it. The Cheerleaders have a lot of heart. They are willing to try to encourage the fans no matter the score. They come to do their jobs every home game no matter what the score is. I checked the Boys and I did not see much heart. I think the Cheerleaders could have beaten the Rams this week with their heart. It is too bad the Boys are not playing with half the heart of their Cheerleaders.

Tony Romo had been somewhat of an NFL opening-week quarterbacking exception, enjoying a great Sunday in Cleveland, except, of course, for that bloody chin thing.

The weekend had also gone very well for Bill and Sharon White of Irving, who were returning late in the evening after an out-of-town trip.

The national news was about a day of QB disasters around the league, even at the elite level. Tom Brady, down and out for the season. Peyton Manning, looking feeble and lost. Carson Palmer, his once stellar reputation taking another plunge.

And for pure weirdness, there's Vince Young, a young man in obvious need of either a good shrink or a good butt-kicking.

Meanwhile, even as devout football fans, the Whites had been on the road and out of touch with the NFL events. They particularly didn't want to know the Dallas Cowboys' outcome. The TiVo at home was waiting. Bill planned to watch the Cleveland game immediately, with suspense attached.

But a couple of miles from the house, while driving on MacArthur Boulevard, the Whites had their own mini-disaster. A tire blew on the Mercury. Bill, luckily, managed to nurse his wounded ride off the street and into the lighted parking lot of a strip mall.

For troubling news on a Sunday, it didn't rank up there with taking a direct hit to the chin from the helmet of linebacker Willie McGinest, but Bill became a bit woozy himself when he discovered his jack was malfunctioning. Never a good thing at midnight.

Plan B kicked in, however. One of those cigarette-lighter-plug-in air compressors was available. Except it was leaking more air than it was pumping.

"I don't know, a hundred cars, probably more, had to go by. Nobody was stopping," said Bill. "That's just kind of the way it is in today's world."

And then ...

"Bill was fooling with that tire, and I was standing beside the car watching him," Sharon said. "The next thing I know, a nice-looking young man, very well-dressed, but with something strange on his chin, he walked up, smiled, and said, 'Hey, you need some help?' "

Sharon hadn't even noticed a car pull up.

So now it's Bill and the well-dressed young man both bent over a flat tire at midnight on a Sunday, trying to figure out why a faulty air compressor plugged into the cigarette lighter was leaking more than pumping.

"I didn't get a good look at him at that point," Bill said. "We were both trying to get the tire pumped up."

Sharon, however, took a second look. "You are Tony Romo," she said. No reply, just a smile, and then it was back to work on the compressor.

Finally, they got the tire aired up. Enough, anyway, to make a slow drive home.

"I didn't want to bother him," Sharon said, "but I asked again, 'You're Tony Romo, right?' " I knew it was him by then. But he smiled and said, 'Yes, ma'am.' "

Sharon: "I did something no 50-year-old woman should be doing, but I screamed real loud, and then jumped up and hugged him."

Bill's immediate response was "Don't tell me how you guys did. I'm going home to watch it."

By the next day, after seeing what the "something strange on his chin" was about, that made the Whites appreciate Romo's gesture even more.

"He gets almost knocked cold in that game, and I read it took 13 stitches to close the cut, and then there's a long flight home [the Cowboys charter arrived at around 11 p.m.] and Tony's got to be dog tired, but he still was a good enough person to stop and help us," Bill said.

"Look, we're driving a 10-year old car that is sitting in a parking lot with a flat tire in the dead of night. He could tell by that we're nothing special. But here's a young man making millions of dollars, and he's got all this fame and glory, and he does this?"

The Whites couldn't thank Romo enough. "But if I ever had the opportunity, I'd also like to thank two other people. His mom and dad," Bill said. "They obviously raised him right. We've got kids about his age. We know how difficult it can sometimes be in this day and age."

(An e-mail from Sharon alerted me to Tony's good deed. No Cowboys official knew about it even by Wednesday.)

Not that the Whites weren't already Romo fans, but ...

"After all this, what I realized is the athletic thing is Tony's gift, yet it goes beyond that," Bill said. "This was a good person we met. A good person with small-town values despite all the big-city fame and fortune."

Shrug off a blow to the chin. Win a game. Help strangers fix a flat. It was a fine Sunday for the kid.

Monday Night- Here I Come!

I have been a Dallas Cowboy fan for as long as I can remember. As my friend Kerrbob would say, "Larry's blood turns Blue and Silver in September." Because I live in Southwest Missouri and have not traveled much, I have never been to Dallas (except for a layover at the Airport).

This next weekend, I am taking a trip to Dallas with my wife and another couple. This next Monday Night, I will be in Texas Stadium for their home opener of their final season there.

I will be ready for some football!

The Romo Conspiracy Part II

The following story is pure fan-fiction, not to be taken as factual. It is a spoof comedy piece. This is not an attack on any of the individuals in the story. This was spurred on by Tony Romo going to Mexico with the Simpson family during the Bye Week.

On the Monday before the 2008 Playoffs began, in their evil headquarters somewhere in a swap meets a rogue band of NFL Owners once again. As Daniel Snyder, owner of the vile Redskins, call their sinister meeting to order. “Fellow evil NFC East Owners, I come before you in our mission to find Tony Romo’s weakness. We have tried several things to stop him including the Britney-Bot but yet we have continued to fail. I have been contacted by the mysterious Mister X who thinks he can help us with our mission.”

The dastardly Twin owners of the Giants, John Mara and Steve Tisch, agreed that they would like to hear from Mister X. Eagles' owner, Jeffrey Lurie, remained skeptical of this unknown entity. He hissed “How can we trust this Mister X and why would he want to help us?”

With utmost cockiness, Snyder venomously responded, “Because I said so! Trust me; he wants to see the Cowboys knocked out of the playoffs as bad as we do. He has a plan to do it.” This appeared to convince this group of Legion of Doom want-to-bes.

Snyder activated the view monitor to reveal the mysterious Mister X. Initially it appeared that his identity was covered by his cloak. On further examination, the evil owners realized that Mister X’s identity was being masked by the blue hooded sweat shirt.

Speaking through a voice scrambler, Mister X spoke “I understand your evil group is seeking a way to stop the nauseously happy Tony Romo. I believe I have a plan to take him down. Since Jessica is a known weakness, I suggest you use her to take him down.”

In unison, the twin owners of the Giants quickly responded, “How can we use her to take Romo down other than having her show up at their next game? She has already learned not to do that any more.”

Mister X slowly spoke, “I suggest you enlist the service of Jessica’s sister. She has a motive to pay her older sister back for her lack of success. I have already set it up. If you allow her to sing during half time at each of your stadiums next season, then she will help you. She is willing to convince Jessica to take Romo to Mexico during his off week. She will manipulate Jessica into giving Romo a lot of authentic Mexican water to drink. He will be sick as a dog for the entire week. He will not be up to winning their playoff game.”

Lurie turned pail white and exclaimed “If we let Ashley Simpson sing at our half times, there will be riots from our fans! We will probably lose season ticket holders. That price is very high. I don’t know”

Snyder calmly responded, “I am willing to pay that price to see Romo crash again in the play offs. But what will you get from this arrangement, Mr. X. Why help us take down Romo.”

Mister X slowly said, “I have my reasons. I guess you could say I feel it is my Patriotic Duty.”

The vile conspiracy agreed to the terms and set the evil plan in motion.

Will Tony fall victim to a blonder from his ditsy blond bombshell of a girlfriend or will he once again outwit the foulest of plans from this wicked organization? Tune in next Sunday for the results.

The Romo Conspiracy

The following is not a fantasy article but fan fiction.

The following story is pure fan-fiction, not to be taken as factual. It is a spoof comedy piece. This is not an attack on any of the individuals in the story. This was spurred on by Tony Romo being seen with Britney Spears during his off week.

On Monday of week 8 of the 2007 Season, in their evil headquarters somewhere in a swap meets a rogue band of NFL Owners. Daniel Snyder, owner of the vile Redskins, called the meeting order. The meeting included other shady owners: Jeffrey Lurie of the Eagles; and John Mara and Steve Tisch owners of the Giants. Their meeting was for one sinister reason, to find a way to stop Tony Romo from beating them.

As they pondered how they might be able to slow down Romo so their teams will still have a chance to win the NFC East, the brainstorming ideas were all over the map. One of Lurie's henchmen quickly entered the room and brought him important information. After much trolling of the internet, they have might have found what they were looking for.

Jeff Lurie announced the rest of the group in a spooky gruff voice, "We have found Romo's weakness." This appeared to delight the room. John Mara exclaimed with excitement, "Tell me boy what can we ..." The sentenced was finished by his twin owner Steve Tisch, "… use to stop this offensive weapon of the Boys!" Snyder, the mastermind of this evil group sat back in his chair rubbing his chin patiently awaiting the good news. Lurie spoke slowly in his gruff tone, "It appears that Romo has an obsession with Britney Spears and her panty-less pictures. He has been downloading these photos continually during his off time."

Snyder had a disappointed look on his face. He quickly lashed out at Lurie, "How can this help us! Lots of red-blooded America men download those photos. This is pointless."

Lurie responded with an vile grin. "You don't understand. This does give us a huge edge. Britney is one of our Eagle skanky Fem-bots. She is a robot that we use to seduce various Free Agents to come to the Eagles. If they decide not to come, she leaves them with a very special VD. It is untreatable without our antidote. It causes severe pain to the player where they can not focus on the game. It will turn great players into below average players if not treated. All we have to do is to get Romo to go out with Britney on the off week and we will have him!" He exclaimed. Then he followed it up with a sinister laugh Oh, ha, ha, ha! The other members followed with their own sinister laughs. The plan was to be put into immediate action with Britney calling Romo.

The bands of villainous owners met the next week. They were all pleased with the results. Entertainment television was reporting that Tony was seen with Britney over the weekend. Their plan had taken affect. If Britney had followed her programming, she would have slept with Romo and infected him. Romo was reporting that he was just friends with Britney but that would be inconceivable to believe.

As they watched the reports on the Cowboys practice, they were disappointed. There was no mention of Romo playing poorly or being in pain. Maybe Jerry Jones was just protecting his new multi-million dollar investment by not reporting it. Lurie was confident that his fem-bot had delivered the VD and that they would beat the Cowboys on Sunday. At this point, all that the rogue band could do was waiting until Sunday's game to see if they had found Romo's weakness.

Suffering from dyslexia, I have always struggled with the proper spelling and grammar. I am not a details person but rather a big picture guy. But through these struggles and the wonderful invention of grammar and spell check, I have continued my love of writing. With my blogs, I get the opportunity to write about subjects that interest me.

One of the things that I love is my Dallas Cowboys. I have loved them since I was a young boy, to my father's chagrin. I have found a great website, Cowboys Pride, where others share my love for the Cowboys. Yesterday, I officially accepted the offer from the fine folks, Deb and Reg in particular, at Cowboys Pride to become a Staff Writer for them. I am extremely excited about the opportunity to be on staff at the wonderful website.

This is really an honor because Cowboys Pride already has a host of wonderful writers. It is a true privilege and honor for me to join this staff. The site administration is extremely encouraging and supportive. They even have an editor to catch all my grammatical errors, which I definitely need.

One of my favorite things about Cowboys Pride is our acceptance of non-Cowboy fans. We invite fans of other teams to join in and express their opinions. Each week, we highlight and invite members of a fan site for that week's opponent. This week we have joined forces with the fine folks at The Viking Board to discuss the game. There is always a fun but competitive discussion.
